MFA is currently seeking an individual to fill a part-time, flexible position within our Firm’s State and Local Tax (SALT) Practice. This position offers the opportunity to develop and apply your knowledge to a wide range of tax issues and processes, participating in strategic resolutions to challenging matters. No day is the same for a member of the SALT practice at MFA. You are likely to spend your time on a range of varying projects, responsibilities and tasks. To make that happen, you will be working in a highly collaborative culture, where listening to and sharing information with colleagues is an essential part of the role.



  • Utilize advanced Excel functions including V-lookup, pivot tables and formulas to perform recurring processes in accordance and for ad hoc reporting and analysis
  • Analyze data and compare multiple variables while making sound business decisions
  • Analyze data from customer systems to ensure adherence to all state and local tax laws. In situations of data peculiarities, works to provide solutions for resolution
  • Prepare and perform all monthly tax reconciliation of sales and use tax transaction data, review accounting transactions to support liabilities for timely compliance reporting and compute sales/use taxes owed
  • Timely and accurately prepare and file monthly, quarterly and annual sales and use tax returns for various entities ensuring compliance with payment, reporting or other tax requirements
  • Maintain sales and use tax filing calendars, registrations and filings
  • Prepare refund applications to request tax refunds and monitors the status of the refund
  • Ensure compliance with all state requirements such as business qualifications, resale certificate validation, preparation of annual reports
  • Assist with indirect tax audits including data gathering, report analysis, account analysis & reconciliation
  • Effectively manage personal time and effort to achieve departmental and organizational goals and deadlines
  • Assume additional responsibilities and assist with special projects as needed or directed

Desired Skills & Qualifications

  • Three to four plus (3-4+) years of prior experience in public accounting or general accounting focusing on compliance, consulting and bookkeeping
  • Proficient and effective in Excel, with the ability to manipulate large volumes of data
  • Strong customer service and communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain customer relationships
  • Detail-oriented, driven to learn, thrives in a collaborative setting and has an aptitude for or experience with managing multiple engagements and priorities in a fast-paced and growing environment
  • Ability to identify and raise issues to tax management to ensure that customers collect, accrue and remit the appropriate tax
  • QuickBooks certified or similar bookkeeping software expertise preferred
  • Strong organization, coordination, and follow-up skills as well as an attention to quality, thoroughness and accuracy
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills
  • An ability to work independently
